RGB vs CMYK: What You Need to Know Before Printing

Understanding Colour Profiles: CMYK vs RGB in Printing

When preparing your files for print, it’s important to understand the difference between RGB and CMYK colour profiles — and how they affect the final result.

RGB (Red, Green, Blue)

  • Used for: Screens — like phones, computers, and TVs

  • Colour range: Bright and vibrant

  • Why it’s a problem: Files created in RGB may look great on screen but often print duller or with unexpected colour shifts

CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black)

  • Used for: Professional printing

  • Colour range: Slightly more limited, but accurately reflects what printers can reproduce

  • Why it matters: All print jobs are output in CMYK, so files should be converted to CMYK for best results

What This Means for Your Print Job

  • Files sent in RGB will be converted to CMYK, which may cause colour changes (especially with bright or neon tones).

  • To ensure colour accuracy, please design and export your files in CMYK when possible.

  • If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help check your file or offer a test print (from £15 + VAT).

Pro Tip:

Want the most accurate results? Use CMYK + 300dpi resolution and embed your fonts before sending your artwork.
